Lacrosse - The Fastest Game on Two Feet

Apr. 01, 2019

Dear Parents and FUTURE PLAYERS,

We are excited to be kicking off our 2019 Lacrosse season shortly. Since 2005, when our association introduced

the sport of lacrosse to our community, the registered participants has continually grown in both the communities

of Cold Lake and Bonnyville.

The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. ANYONE CAN PLAY LACROSSE- big or

small. The game of lacrosse requires speed, coordination and agility, not brawn. An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is

fast paced and full of action. Lacrosse, also known as “THE FASTEST GAME ON 2 FEET”, is becoming more and

more popular in Canada and the United States. Lacrosse is sometimes perceived to be a violent and dangerous

game, however, injury statistics prove otherwise. While serious injuries can and do occur in lacrosse, the game has

evolved with emphasis on safety, and the rate of injury is comparatively low.

Lacrosse has been known to be a GREAT crossover sport to hockey for many NHL players today and in the past.

NHL stars such Wayne Gretzky, John Taveres, Connor McDavid, Steve Stamkos, Jonathan Toews, etc have played

lacrosse and used this sport to help them develop skills for hockey. Hockey players benefits from lacrosse by

developing:

? Stickhandling creativity

? Creativity in tight areas

? Reading the plat offensively

? Strong, dynamic defensive tactics

? Strength and Endurance

? An appreciation for a new, fast-paced sport

? Increased hand-eye coordination

? Heads-up play - teaches players to play with their head up and to be more aware of their surrondings

? Quickness and agility around the net

? Self Esteem, respect, integrity and fairness

? Leadership skills

? Scoring skills are honed by shooting at smaller targets and picking corners

? Creativity of fakes, back passes and shots

? IT IS FUN

“I could hardly wait to get my lacrosse stick out and start throwing the ball against the walls and working on our

moves as we played the lacrosse equivalent to road hockey. All the good hockey players seemed to play

lacrosse in those days and everyone of them learned something from the game to carry over to the other -

things athletes can only learn by mixing up the games they play when they are young”-Wayne Gretzky

“It’s lacrosse that helped teach me to spin off checks, take shots and protect the puck under pressure. My stick

skills, the way to read the play quickly comes from lacrosse. The hand-eye coordination, is just one of the little

things that helps you in hockey.”-John Tavares
